Chapter Twenty

As the boys reached a pause in their conversation, Evelyn floated into the center of the room, still smiling as she came to a stop in front of the trio of teenagers. “Um… hey, guys.” She said, with a friendly wave. “I’ve heard a lot about you. I’m Evelyn.”

Teen (29)

Lucas’ eyes went wide, but he said nothing. Frantic and uncertain, he glanced sideways at both of his friends.

“Hey, hey, shhhh! Did you guys hear something weird?” Sam asked seriously. “Yo, Luke. Mute the TV, man.”

Teen (29)-2

“Uh…”

“I’ll do it.” Noah rolled his eyes, reaching for the remote. The room fell into silence.

“You can hear me?” Evelyn asked excitedly. “Lucas, tell them it’s me!”

Sam’s eyes flicked back and forth over the area where Evelyn was standing. “This is really freaking me out… Please tell me you guys can hear that. It’s like… a whisper or something.”

“Dude, that was the wind.” Noah laughed.

“I’m serious!” Sam insisted.

Evelyn looked toward Lucas, but he completely avoided her gaze. “Come on, aren’t you gonna tell them?”

Noah’s eyes suddenly lit up. “Wait… I think I hear it too…” He turned to face Lucas. “I think it’s that girlfriend of yours…”

Teen (30)

“Yes! It’s me! I’m here!” Evelyn waved her arms excitedly. Has he already told them about me? Come on, come on… Just look closer…

“It is her!” Noah continued, leaning closer as though straining to hear. “She’s saying… ‘Oh Lukey, give your imaginary girlfriend a big ol’ kiss’” He puckered his lips toward Lucas, giving him a mocking, flirtatious stare.

Evelyn’s face fell. He thinks it’s all a joke… But not Sam…  “Tell them!” She said pleadingly.

Lucas hesitated, just for a moment. He flicked his eyes toward Evelyn and back. “Ha-ha, very funny.” His mouth stretched into a smile. “Don’t tell me you’re still taking all that drunken ranting seriously.” He laughed.

What is he doing?!

Teen (30)-3

“Sorry, dude. That one was below the belt… But I couldn’t resist…” Noah snickered.

“It’s all good.” Lucas assured him. “But damn, I think I want some of whatever Sam’s been smoking…”

Teen (31)

Sam took the teasing in stride. “Nah, sorry. I keep all the good stuff for myself.” He smirked, then checked the time. “I should get going. I told my parents I’d be back after dinner.” He laughed. “And hearing voices is probably as good a cue to leave as any…”

“Yeah, I should probably head home too.” Noah agreed. “Stupid curfew…” He added under his breath.

He’s ignoring me…Evelyn could not remember the last time she felt such rage. She glared daggers at Lucas and her entire form began to glow a fiery red.

“Sure, just sit there!” She shouted angrily. “Just ignore your – what was it he called me? – ‘Imaginary’ girlfriend!”

Noah and Sam had risen to their feet to say their goodbyes. Noah still looked quite amused, but Sam kept glancing uncertainly in Evelyn’s general direction with every shout. “You’re sure you guys don’t hear anything?” He muttered.

Lucas looked away uncertainly. “Uh… no. No, I’m pretty sure it’s just you.”

Teen (32)

“See ya soon, Luke.” Noah waved happily, and an uncertain Sam soon did the same.

“It was so lovely meeting you!” Evelyn shouted sarcastically from across the room.

Teen (33)

Lucas put his face in his hands as his friends left the room. As soon as they were gone, he rose to his feet, crossing quickly to where Evelyn stood.

“What the hell was that?!” He demanded.

“Oh, I’m sorry, are you talking to me?” Evelyn waved sarcastically. “Hello, nice to finally be acknowledged.”

Teen (35)

Lucas rolled his eyes. “Oh cut the drama, Ev. What were you thinking, bursting in like that?”

“What was I thinking? What about you? You had a chance to finally tell them about me, and you just sat there! How do you think that made me feel?”

“They couldn’t even see you, Ev!” Lucas cried, exasperated.

“But Sam could hear me.” She countered. “If you’d just tried to explain, maybe then he could have seen me too!”

“And then what? What would that accomplish?”

“Someone would know I exist! I’d actually be able to talk to someone besides you! I love you, but do you know how lonely it gets having just one person I can talk to?”

Teen (36)

“Oh, and you think I like it that way? You think it’s just a walk in the park having to keep you a secret from everyone? ‘Cause it sure as hell isn’t!”

“Fine, go find a new girlfriend then, if I’m such a burden!”

All the anger washed away from Lucas’ face in an instant.

“Hey, hey.” He put his arms out toward Evelyn. “Don’t talk like that… Please.”

Teen (37)

Evelyn sighed, her own rage quickly receding. “I shouldn’t have said that, I’m sorry…” She felt embarrassed for even thinking it. “I didn’t mean it. And I shouldn’t have just burst in the way I did…”

Teen (38)

Lucas sighed. “I understand why you did. But I… I don’t know how they’d react, Ev. I’ve tried to tell them about you before.” He confessed. “And they just don’t get it… I’m sorry I didn’t tell them. I didn’t know what else to do.”

The ghost sighed sadly. “It was stupid of me.”

She thought back to how everyone before Lucas had reacted upon seeing her — running, screaming… What if his friends had reacted the same way? What would that mean for her? Or himHow could I be such an idiot?

“I just wish things could be different.” Evelyn continued, hanging her head. “I wish things were normal.”

Teen (39)

“Me too.” Lucas agreed. “And someday, they will be. I promise, okay? Just… not now.”

Evelyn reached forward, pulling Lucas into an embrace. “I’m sorry.”

“Me too.”

Ugh how could he have acted like that? One thing would have been him pretending nothing was going on but him actually joking about it. I don’t think I would have forgiving him as easily although she did do it without letting him know. I knew one of them would hear something, that’s interesting, she could try with him in the future.

I always love your comments because you ask great questions and make good observations! Lucas is, over all, a great guy. But we are gonna see more and more as he gets older that he has a kind of selfish streak that wasn’t so apparent when he was a kid.

That selfishness is part of why he reacted the way he did — in that moment, he was only thinking of himself and how his friends would think of him. He doesn’t see this selfishness in himself, so he’s kind of oblivious to it.

Meanwhile, Evelyn has basically put Lucas on a pedestal. She’s so easy to forgive because he’s all she has, so she justifies his mistakes.

Sorry for the random character study hahaha

Aw, thank you. 🙂 I love the character study. I guess it’s true, I’ve seen them act like that, it’s just this time I was looking at things from Evelyn’s perspective. Also, I see why she forgave him easily, something else I didn’t consider when I read it. Wow, so many things, this is why I’m not a writer or a critic lol

I’m way late to the party, but I felt like might also be trying to protect her by laughing it off. His friends, although having matured somewhat, still don’t seem quite open-minded enough not to be a danger to her.

So true! He had no way of predicting how they may have reacted!(I don’t think it would have ended well…)

  2. Poor Evelyn. What if after the plant has grown to bring her back to life and she comes back and leaves Lucas because he’s selfish? I just keep thinking something big is going to happen soon.

Oh no, more negative predictions hahaha There are many bumps in the road ahead. The story of Lucas and Evelyn is quite a rollercoaster ride! That’s all I’ll say right now haha Thanks for reading, as always!!!

      • Not negative comments, I’m just tossing out twists that could happen! You had mentioned that there’s a possibility that we may not like a character in your story because of something that happens. So I keep predicting all of these wild twists that can happen! 🙂

That’s a possibility, I never thought of Lucas being the bad guy only Evelyn. Interesting, this changes some of the ideas I might have tried to come up.

Everyone is saying that Lucas was being selfish, but wasn’t Evelyn too? I think so. They’re both guilty lol.

Ooh, I love this comment – I kinda feel like they’ve had each other totally to themselves, and are both scared to open that up even though they also *want to* for lots of reasons. It’s created a kind of lash out and retreat cycle that manifests differently for each of them. Neat!

You’ve really got quite a complex dynamic going on here between Evelyn and Lucas – good show! 🙂

😦 poor Evelyn. I wish they’d been able to see her. Even if it did freak them out at least they would realize Lucas wasn’t crazy.

[FUTURE COMMENT READERS — THERE ARE SPOILERS AHEAD IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE STORY THROUGH TO THE END]

Thank you! 🙂 I’m glad you’re enjoying these beginning chapters 🙂 Obviously we know it’s not going to work out, but yes there was always something really innocent/pure and genuine about his love for her, and I loved writing their relationship! I think if she weren’t dead, they’d really be “meant to be”. But alas, they were not, and Lucas discovered that you can kind of have more than one “love of your life”, and Mel was it 🙂

And yeah, their relationship is very bizarre in both ways. Like, she’s permanently 20, and when they meet he’s 11/12. So there’s a minor creep-factor there, I guess haha. And now (in the “present day” of my story), the creep-factor is a little reversed, since he’s an old man but she’s still 20 and hopelessly in love with him hahaha.

Thank you for your thoughtful and insightful comment 🙂

Wow, Evelyn got really angry when Lucas ignored her. I guess he doesn’t want to scare his friends saying he knows a ghost. But I’m glad the two made up!

    I’ll just keep reading!! 🙂

Oh, poor Evelyn and Lucas. I’m glad they both got over the anger quickly. Their relationship is so delicate yet strong. I hope he can make what he needs to soon. And Sam needs a hearing aid. lolol Ok, not really. I mean she is dead. We can’t expect him to hear her that well. 😉

This is sad. I’m really sorry for Ev. I can’t even imagine how hard it must be for her to not only invisible, but also have to be some huge secret. Ugh….what a crappy existence.
